I met my contact (a wonderful young lady) at the airport. She introduced herself, and the next thing she said was, "I'm so sorry, but there has been a one day delay." No worries, I thought. That's why we built in extra days in the schedule. However, by the time we got from the airport to the hotel, things had changed a bit. The situation developing in Irian Jaya had gone from bad to worse. That night, my climbing partner, Dirk, and I visited a national monument, and learned a bit about the history of Indonesia. We came back, had dinner, and then I went to bed! Whew! I hadn't slept in two days!

The next day, Dirk and I met for breakfast, and then he showed me the mall. It turns out that Jakarta is noted for its shopping, restaurants and clubs. We had fun checking out the supermarket and the various stalls of clothes and other various items. When we came back, I needed a nap, as I had a short sleep the night before. However, before I could catch a few winks, I had to sort out a minor logistical problem (there is a gross story about the bed, but I won't get into that here!), and then I was sleeping. Later that afternoon, I got a call from Dirk, he had received news from out contact in Irian Jaya - things are definitely not looking good for the expedition. Dirk and I swung into action not long after that call, and started to see how we could - in my case, get back to Canada; and in Dirk's case, how he could get to Australia!

We found that we had options avaiable to us, and although we were supposed to wait until the next morning, at 2130hrs, we called our Irian Jaya contact and requested confirmation as to whether the expeidtion was a go or no-go. It was confirmed as a no-go. I tried to change my ticket that night, so I could leave the next day. And Dirk worked throughout the next few hours to get a flight to Australia!

In the morning, I found out that Dirk had managed to get a flight to Australia, and he would leave that night. I would make my way to the airline office, first thing, and change my ticket so I could leave the next day.

And then, the next day, I was off! After two days in Jakarta, I was on my way back to Canada! I bought a couple of gifts for my sister and her fiance. I tell you - these are the most expensive Christmas gifts I've ever bought!!

In case you're wondering why I was trying to get back to Canada so quick. It was so that I could come back, reclaim the vacation days I did not use, and hopefully return in a couple of months to make another attempt.

And there you have my expedition to Carstenz Pyramid - not all that exciting, but from a logistical point of view, we were kept very busy!

I look forward to returning in a couple of months! We'll see if things settle down enough, so that it becomes safe to attempt to climb Carstenz Pyramid.

For now, I'll be working on my running, as I get prepared for the Marathon des Sables.

All the best,
Meagan

Carstenz Pyramid - A few days away!!

Hi Everyone!

Well, it's been a very busy time - so much going on!
(You can check out what I've been up to at www.meaganmcgrathadventurer.com )

It's just a few days until I'm off on my next adventure. Don't worry though, I'll be getting back on the training wagon as soon as I return from Carstenz Pyramid, to get ready for Marathon des Sables.

I'm working on a few exciting projects - after Marathon des Sables, I'll be guiding a trip up Kilimanjaro. My end goal - to climb mountains, cross deserts (hot and cold) and to demonstrate that exploration is alive and well!

I recently received an email from one of my friends on my Mount Everest Expedition. My friend asked if I was still into climbing Carstenz Pyramid - and it didn't take me too long to respond!!

So now, I am off to climb Carstenz Pyramid. Why this mountain you may ask - well, I have a bit of history to share with you...

Long ago, in the 80's (okay, it wasn't that long ago!), two men were striving to be the first to complete the fabled Seven Summits - the highest mountain on each Continent of the World.

They each encountered many obstacles, personal, professional, political, etc.

Finally, one of them completed the series - his name was Dick Bass. An American. He completed the Seven Summits, including Kosciusko in "Australia".

The other man, Pat Morrow, a Canadian, still wanted to climb the Seven Summits, but he had a different take on what the highest mountain in "Australia" should be - and he climbed Carstenz Pyramid (in Indonesia).

Now, you might be wondering why I have highlighted "Australia" in quotes. Well, it is this Continent that is still debated wrt the Seven Summits. In school, we learn that Australia is a Continent (and there just isn't much mention of Oceania). Some consider Australia not be a Continent on its own, rather, it is part of a larger geographical area called Oceania. If you consider Australia a Continent on its own - then Kosciusko is the highest point, and therefore a Seven Summit mountain. If you consider Oceania a Continent, then Carstenz Pyramid becomes the highest point in "Australia", and is a Seven Summit mountain. Therefore, there are now two official versions of the Seven Summits.

I completed the first (and the original Seven Summit series) in May 2007, with the successful summit of Mount Everest.

In order to cover all my basis, I will attempt to climb Carstenz Pyramid, in an effort to complete the 'other' verison of the Seven Summits. Should this attempt be successful, I will be the Youngest Canadian to achieve this feat, and I will be the Only Canadian Woman to achieve this feat - pretty cool, eh!

So, there you have it! I've been a bit busy putting all this together, and even now, I am working on a project that will be quite fun and will take place in 2009!

I encourage you to stay tuned, as you simply never know what I'll be up to next! I sure don't!

Meagan

Back at it! I'm currently investigating the possibility of an interesting project that I'd like to attempt. It's pretty huge, and it would certainly be the adventure of a lifetime!

I can't really release any of the details, yet. It's very much in the preliminary stage, but needless to say, I'd be earning the title, "Adventurer".

In the meantime, I continue to train for the Marathon des Sables 2008. I've got my plane ticket, insurance - and I'll slowly be acquiring the gear. It's going to be a tough event, but I've always wanted to give it a shot.

Running, jogging and shuffling through the Sahara Desert for 6 days, and a distance of 250km, is going to be a tough challenge - but it's something I've always wanted to try. I'll be training in winter, with -20C average temps, and then jumping off a plane with +35C (or more) temps - the challenge will be adapting to such drastically different climates.

Stay tuned for more info about the Marathon des Sables 2008!

Meagan

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://meaganmcgrathadventurer.blogspot.com/2007/08/back-at-it-more-adventures-in-works.html' title='Back at it! And don't worry, I've been fitting in work, too!

Over the weekend, I was very fortunate to go with my friends to Mount Marcy, in New York state. We made great time (up and down), and everyone had fun! Going up was easy - coming down was crazy - my climbing partners can really burn up the trail on the way home!!

Sunday was busy with training, and replacing my watch (again!) A bit bummed about that - but a girl needs a watch when she climbing up a mountain, eh!

But Sunday ended well, with a visit to my old friend, and a visit with a new one! All in all - it's been a super crazy time!

I will continue to make last minute purchases, fuss about with my new bits of gear, and continue training as hard as I can!

I'll talk to ya'll later!

Meagan

Expedition - It's almost here!

Hey Everybody!

Whew - it's been a while since I've written on the blog! I've experienced a few technical difficulties but it's all sorted out, now!

I have had an amazing ride so far. One of the highlights occured just last week. I visited Algonquin Road Public School, and Lo-Ellen Park Secondary School - these are the schools I attended in Sudbury!

I cannot tell you how exciting it was to talk with the students. The students at Lo-Ellen were very keen - they had so many questions. High school is that important time where you really begin to develop the person you will become. I hope that at least one student was able to see that their dreams are not impossible, but with hardwork and dedication - they can make their goal a reality. One thing I hope these students remember: we are all our own person - and we shape who we become - by being positive, and doing your very best - you will have made great strides toward making your own dreams come true.

And then there were the students at Algonquin. What can I say! This was an unbelievable experience. The support that they showed me for this expedition was utterly astounding. I am so grateful to all of them for their support and dedication, in helping me with this expedition. Some of the students even prepared awesome signs that I use for encouragement! I even got to swap stories with some of the students! These guys and gals were really amazing! I really hope that I am able to be successful, so that I can go back to Algonquin and show them that anything they can think of can become a reality - no matter how crazy it might seem!

This visit was truly inspirational. I was so touched by the support of Algonquin and Lo-Ellen, and I aim to do the very, very best I can so that they can see that anything is possible. Thank you!

For me, just attempting Mount Everest is a huge accomplishment. Being there will, no doubt, blow my mind - everything after that, well...ohhhh-yeah!!

Take care, Everyone!
Meagan

Sad News : Chris Boskoff and Charlie Fowler

Hello Everyone,

Today, I am delivering some very sad news regarding mountaineering.

As many of you know, I have always travelled with a company called, "Mountain Madness", based out of Seattle, Washington. Many of you have heard me refer to Chris (Boskoff) as somewhat of my mentor, with whom I climbed with in Antarctica in Dec 2004. As well, many of you have heard me mention Charlie (Fowler), who guided me on Gasherbrum II, in 2005.

Sadly, "the body of [Charlie Fowler] missing for more than a month has been found on a remote mountain in southwestern China while a second climber [Chris Boskoff] is still missing and presumed dead, a rescue coordinator said Wednesday. ... [Charlie Fowler] was found at the 5,300-meter (17,390-foot) level on Genie Mountain, also known as Genyen Peak, not far from the Sichuan border with Tibet. The mountain is 6,204 meters (20,354 feet) tall." To read the full story, please refer to: http://www.cnn.com/2006/WORLD/asiapcf/12/27/china.climbersl.ap/index.html

Chris was an inspirational person to me. She was an exceptional climber, one of the best in the world. She had that special talent of being caring, and yet, being extremely businesslike at the same time. Charlie was a guy who definitely did things his own way, and was not afraid to express his opinions, no matter what impact it might have. These were two very strong, very capable people. They will be missed.

With a heavy heart, Good bye Chris and Charlie.

Science North - Summit Supporter !! Not a big feat, necessarily - but a wonderful sense of satisfaction! We will continue to head out to Skyline until the snow comes, and then we'll have to figure out a different hill to hike up.

It was great to feel the exertion in the legs! The trick is to really enjoy the effort - not to be scared of it - or dislike it - you really have to love it!

That's all for now - a real quicky.

But like I said before - be sure to check out the website and the blog in December! Not to worry, I'm back! I can't tell you all the news, yet - but come back in December and then I'll have lots to say!

The developments have kept me busy, and as predicted, I've been learning alot. It's fantastic and fun, and I really enjoy the work.

On the training front, I've been hard at work. Today, in fact, my friend and I got a quick hike in. We climbed the "Skyline" at Camp Fortune ski hill a couple of times. We ended a bit earlier than expected, but it was an excellent time! If you could imagine - I was giddy with excitement, and could have climbed all day! Seriously though, it was the ideal training for what I'll be facing on Mount Everest. It's the closest thing there is in Ottawa to a mountain! The pack was weighted to only 40lbs, but I'm hoping to increase that to 50lbs in the coming weeks.

We will be returning in the next couple of weeks, and when it begins to snow (and the hill opens to skiers) we will figure out another method of training on hills.

It is entirely possible to train alone, but training with a friend, especially up a hike like the "Skyline" makes it that much more fun!

I have been travelling a bit over the past couple of weeks, and training while on the road - although challenging at times, has also proved to be beneficial, as evidenced when I return home and carry on with my regular training regime!

It really is an exciting time, Everyone! So much has happened, but I'm going to keep it under wraps for now. In December, I will have more to say - and you'll definately want to check it out!

Take care!
Meagan

Ottawa Orthotic Lab - Trekking Sponsor !!

Good day, Everyone

I'd like to welcome the Ottawa Orthotic Lab as a new Trekking Sponsor for my Mount Everest Expedition in 2007!

Such wonderful news and a complete (and welcome) suprise!

I look forward to representing the Ottawa Orthotic Lab. It has been one busy week! Very productive and some very good news came my way! I'll share it with you all in good time, but for now, just know that things are looking very positive!

Of course, wonderful opportunities are earned with hard effort, and I'm very keen to continue working diligently on this project. Everything from training, to producing results for any potential sponsors - even just getting presentations ready - it's great to have this fun project to work on!

One of the tasks I conducted this week is the release of an advertisement for my upcoming presentation at my workplace, and I continued its preparation. The presentation, the first in a series, is about my first experience with climbs at altitude: Kilimanjaro and Aconcagua. It's great public speaking practice, but if it is anything like my other presentations on climbing - I should be very comfortable. It's amazing how easy it is to conduct a presentation on a topic you're truly passionate about!

The administrative tasks continue, and so does the training - but I love it! It is rewarding in every way - it is a job to which I am truly dedicated.

Have a great week, folks!
Meg

Hiked Mount Washington in New Hampshire!

Hey there!

What an awesome weekend! I met a friend of mine in Gorham, NH and we hiked up to Mt Washington! It was an excellent time!

We were going to do the whole Northern Presidential Traverse, but events unfolded such that we were only able to go as far as the summit of Mt Washington. It was such a great time, though. We departed from the Appalachia Parking Lot, and then up to Mt Madison, Mt Adams, Mt Jefferson, Mt Clay and then onto Mt Washington.

We were somewhat stranded on the top of Mt Washington, as I wasn't expecting to pay about $100US (each!) to get down the mtn and back to one of our cars. We were very, very fortunate however, and a wonderful family gave us a lift - not only down the mtn - but all the way back to the parking lot! Thank you awesome family from Maine!

We were very greatful, and in high spirits - although, I know my friend was feeling the pain, a bit.

The next day, I was still into hiking and offered, many times, to hang out with my friend instead of going hiking again. But, what a cool guy - he very was gracious and even drove me to the trailhead, while my car rested at the end (waiting for me to return!) He is a mountaineer too, and totally understands the drive to climb and climb when the chance is there!

On this day, it was raining, and once I broke through the treeline, the wind was ferocious! Hurricane Ernesto was blowing by and I was having to fight off the strong winds! I focussed on each step, so that I did not get blown over and twist an ankle on one of the rocks. It was so different from the day before - the wind was loud as a train! I got to the summit of Mt Washington (again) and this time, there was not a soul around! I had the summit to myself, except, it was pretty challenging to balance on the top in that crazy wind!

I headed into the summit lodge, had a hot chocolate, and headed down to Pinkham's Knotch Lodge (via Lion's Head and Tuckerman's Ravine). It was slow going on the first part, only because my boots were pretty slick on the wet rock, and I didn't want to sprain anything. Once I got to the flat part, I ran to my car. I went off trail sometimes, down these side trails that led to some beautiful waterfall scenery - well worth the deviation!

I got to the hotel at the time I predicted. And all was good!

If you ever get a chance to hike up Mt Washington, I highly reccomend it! What a fun time!
Meg

Canadian Forces PT Award - Level 2!!

Good day, Everyone!

I'm happy to report that I achieved my 2nd level wrt the CF Physical Training Award! Some people laugh about it - "oh, that silly old thing!" But I love waking up each day, knowing that I have an opportunity to log some miles - and get a little bit of personal pride out of the effort.

The hard part is recording all of the units that you accomplish - but it seems that once you get a system figured out, then all you have to do is the workout!

The way it works is you let the PSP staff at the Base gym know that you want to start the clock (so to speak) for the PT award. From that day on, you have 2years to accomplish 2000 units. Some units are acquired on a 1 to 1 basis - ex. 1km of running is 1 unit. But there are some sports where you have do do a bit more work for a single unit - ex. 3km of biking (or 7mins) is 1 unit. Once you have attained 2000 units, you let the PSP staff at the Base gym know you have accomplished 2000 units - and that's that. Every time you complete 2000 units, you get a seal. So, it's not a great-big deal to some folk - but like I said - it's for the personal pride in accomplishing something.

I'll be starting the 3rd level tomorrow - and I wonder if I'll be able to get 2000 units before I head to Mount Everest! Let's find out!

Talk to ya'll later!
Meg

Getting Work Done!!

Good day (or evening, I should say!)

I've just been prepping some sponsorship letters for the last 6hrs. I'll be sending them out next week. I hope my love of climbing comes through in the letters. It's not always about Firsts and Bests - for me, its about the love of the sport, the challenge it provides (not to mention the exercise!)

Seeking sponsorship is a new realm for me, and I'm sure I'll be learning alot as I go. It was the first time I attempted to give a presentation on the 6 mountains of the Seven Summits - typically, I've given presenations on only one mountain at a time.

Everyone was having a good time on the beach, as it was a beautiful evening and the banter was very enjoyable. Only when the bugs got a little bad, did we head inside for the evening's main entertainment. At the beginning of my presentation, I was sure thank my Advanced Base Camp Sponsor, LP (www.laprairieinc.com) and my family who has supported me thus far.

The presentation went on for a while (a long while!), and I shortened many of the stories of my climbs. Everyone had a wonderful time, and they seemed to especially enjoy the props I brought along - the hostess even tried on my down suit!

It was a wonderful evening, and I thank my hosts for inviting me into their home, and allowing me to share some of my adventures.

Best regards,
Meagan

Meg on Sudbury's MCTV News!

Good day, Everyone!

I have just returned from Sudbury, my hometown, where I was featured on the MCTV news!

I'm grateful to Sasha Novack at MCTV, for taking the time to interview me - and post my story on the evening, late evening, and the next day's noon news. She did a wonderful job - many thanks!

This was my first television interview - and once aired, I picked up on some things to improve, in terms of technique for tv interviews - but overall, it was a fantastic experience.

This was the first of the tv interviews, as I hope to get the message out, increasingly over the months, that anyone who has a dream or a desire to do something, should just go for it. Training is coming along excellently. Recently, I was in Washington, DC, where I ran into an old acquaintance from RMC. He is an excellent athlete, and has a great understanding of weight and athletic training. He has been kind enough to provide me with some training tips - and for that, I am very grateful.

He refreshed me on some of the basics of training, and he has offered to sit with me to discuss some of the finer points for proper training - I will be focusing on adaptation (this is what I am doing currently - it's kind of like a refresher on exercise - you know, starting from the ground up), endurance, power, strength, and conversion. This way, I will be training my body, from the very basics to the fine tuning required for each aspect of a climb.

Although I have been "maintaining" before, I am now on the direct path of serious training, with some serious advice to support my goals.

I am grateful for my friend's help, as now I am even more focused on my journey to Everest.

All the best,
Meg

New Mission: Attempting to become the FIRST CF MEMBER to climb Everest!!!

Good day, Everyone!!

Wow! It's been a crazy couple of weeks. So many attempts on Mount Everest this year!

As you may know, I have been keeping a keen eye on a friend of mine - Jeff Warden. He is a CF SAR Tech who was on Mount Everest this year, trying to become the first Canadian Forces (CF) member to climb Mount Everest. We tried very hard to get an expedition on Mount Everest this year, where we could climb together; however, this valiant attempt fell through. Jeff went to Everest alone this year (2006), as this was his chance to make history. I was so happy that he was following his dream. His reports came steadily on everestnews.com via MP3 recordings. When he reported that he had not achieved the summit, I did not believe it. You must understand that Jeff is a very strong climber, and he knows what he is doing. I couldn't wait to speak with him upon his arrival, and find out the details of his trip - and more specifically, what had happened.

We met just the other night to talk about his trip. I tell you, this guy is honest and real, and just as he reported on everestnews.com : Some days you got "it", and some days don't. Unfortunately, the days for his summit attempt were not "his days". No matter - way to go Jeff for following your heart - and living to tell the tale.

So now, this brings me to my mission. Initially I was attempting to become the first woman in the CF to climb Mount Everest, but now, I am also attempting to be the First CF Member to climb Mount Everest and achieve the Seven Summits. I am so looking forward to this challenge. I can't wait to get on the Mountain, and live the life of a climber again, even if it is for just a short little while. I am excited beyond imagine to get going - to get out there and push the body to those limits. Oh yeah - I just can't wait!

Meg

Step by step - I'm making my way to the mountain!

Good day, Everyone!

I know it has been a while since I've posted. Things have been pretty mellow so far. Training is coming along wonderfully. I pedal to and from work, and each morning I train. The weather in Ottawa has been very wet and often windy, and I appreciate this, as I have become used to just pushing through - feeling strong. No matter what - you've just got to push through, eventually you'll get to your destination - maybe feeling a little stronger than you did at the start.

Oh yeah - Congrats to my friend Max Chaya! This is number 6 of the 7 Summits - and now, only one more to go - Mount Everest, in April 2007!

My climbing partner for the day, Andre Dupuis, and I left early to begin the hike. We drove to the trailhead at Charlottes Pass, where it was overcast and a bit chilly. The wind was very strong, and it seemed to gain strength as we made our way up to the summit. It was a very nice hike to the top, where we snapped some photos, and then quickly made our way back down to the trailhead. It was a summit that was very different from the other Seven Summit mountains, as there were no ropes involved, no altitude to contend with, and only a couple hours of work - but it was exhilarating all the same. To stand on the highest point anywhere, is always an exciting moment, whether it be in some strange land, or in your own backyard! Woohoo!

I now look forward to the challenges ahead, with respect to making the attempt to climb Mount Everest a reality. Continent to which I've travelled! It is so beautiful here - the weather is gorgeous and warm - and the people have been amazing. I am very fortunate to have an opportunity to travel here on business. I am travelling with my boss, Andre Dupuis, and on the weekend, we will make an attempt to climb Kosciuszko - the 6th mountain in my quest to achieve the Seven Summits.

We arrived on Sunday, 26 March, at around 1000hrs. Following our check in at the hotel, we dropped our luggage, and began our exploration of Sydney. What a remarkably beautiful city. We strolled along the Darling Harbour walkway, visiting the Greek Festival activities, headed to The Rocks - an historical neighbourhood in Sydney, and eventually made our way to the Sydney Opera House - taking in the wonderful architecture. Throughout the afternoon, we walked to various other places, then slowly made our way back to the hotel. While there, I hope to climb Mount Kosciuszko, the tallest mountain in Australia! Some reports indicate that it might be a 7-hr drive to Charlotte Pass, the trailhead for the climb. I may stay the night in a nearby town, such as Jindabyne, but other than that, I'm going to wait until I'm in country, and have a feel for how the trip is going. Many thanks to all those who stopped by and asked about the adventure on which I will be partaking in April 2007!

I spoke with many people who, each of whom had various interests: Those with specific questions about the climbing gear on display, and those who were interested about why I would embark on such an adventure. I particularly enjoyed a conversation with one kind woman who shared with me her experience of achieving her lifelong dream!

It was wonderful to share my message with all of you: The possibilities are endless....

It's just a matter of taking those first few (possibly difficult steps) - but the feeling of accomplishment is amazing. I encourage all of you who stopped by the booth (and those who are reading this blog), to seek your dream, and go for it.

Happy International Woman's Day, Everybody!
"Ladies, disregard your limits!"
KT Turnstall at the 2006 British Music Awards

International Women's Day

Come and speak with Meagan at the International Women's Day Activities on March 8th between 0900 hrs and 1200 hrs in the NDHQ lobby Click [Here] for more information on International Women's Day.
